The Handy Annie

Well, I know, I'm not claustrophobic after spending 3 hours each day for the last 2 days in 'attic.' It would probably be more accurate to call it the crawl space in the ceiling. All this effort in the name of installing a radiant barrier to lower the heat in the house. Maunawili is known for its cooler and lately overcast weather lately but today of all days, it's brilliant and clear and, as a result, hot (in the ceiling!) It can get upwards of 120 degrees but I could only stand it up to 11'ish this morning before calling it a day! Obviously, I'll have to start earlier in the a.m. while it's cool.

Adjusting planks across joists so I could scoot around on my back to tack up the radiant barrier, tarpfoil (way easier than that awful fiberglass stuff), was an intriguing experience while inhaling dust. Probably shortened my life by a few minutes. 80 square feet done--only another 800 to go!!! Hiking in the New Year at Koko Crater Botanical Garden

January 2, 2009, in an effort to undo all the effects of holidaze partying (as it turns out, it was futile but fun), a few of us dragged our asses out of bed and headed for a little stroll. The crew was comprised of Kath, me, Leland and Karen Miyano, Julia Park, Jan Detweiller and Heidi Bornhorst. Get a couple of plant people together and it becomes a fascinating if incredibly slow (we're talking walking zazen!) tour of the garden. Poor Jan was under the misconception that we would get our heart rate above 60.

Here's a ficus sycamorus that is huge (!) I'm standing with Karen Miyano (L).

Lots of Boababs (le Petit Prince deja vu) . Always an amazing tree to behold!










These unique sturdy gardenias were so fragrant and the hard ridged pods unusual. So very different from other Polynesian gardenias.






This charming cactus animal was in the cacti section. Mui Big Bird! It towered over Kathy.













This trunk formation got all our attention! The goddess resides everywhere.

After our strenuous 4-hour 1-mile "hike," Karen, the Reluctant Caterer surprised us with a fabulous Smoked Salmon Salad. What no champagne?
